On 14 November, 2007, HOYA Corporation USA acquired the IP for Surface Mount Photonics ("SMP"), certain assets, and the Xponent brand name from the former Xponent Photonics, Inc. HOYA will do business under the Xponent brand to deliver SMP based products to the market. Xponent is a division of HOYA CORPORATION USA.
Xponent is the technology leader in the rapidly expanding market for FTTx optical devices. Our patented Surface Mount Photonics technology provides unequaled cost-advantages for building high-quality optical components. Our products include a range of triplexers and diplexers for single-fiber applications including PON, point-to-point and bidirectional RF systems. Our target customers include optical systems vendors, transceiver suppliers and optical subsystem suppliers.
As the name suggests, SMP allows Xponent to leverage legacy semiconductor processing technology and existing contract manufacturing infrastructure to substantially reduce the cost of optical devices. Surface Mount Photonics combines industry-leading Planar Lightwave Circuit ("PLC") technology with patented active device coupling approaches to deliver optical chipsets that can be assembled using low-cost die bonders without a need for hermetic packaging. Furthermore, these chipsets can be assembled alongside ICs on printed circuit boards with standard PCB assembly processes. Surface Mount Photonics dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of optical devices while providing industry-leading specifications for reach, thermal performance, reliability, power consumption and footprint.
Xponent's business model is unique in the industry. Our strategy is to become a broad-based horizontal supplier of merchant optical assemblies. This is contrary to the vertically integrated model adopted by most optical device suppliers. Xponent's adoption of a horizontal model (similar to the dominant IC model) is enabled by SMP's design-for-manufacturability advantages that eliminate traditional optical packages and instead allow our products to be produced using high-volume semiconductor processes and integrated alongside ICs on printed circuit boards using standard PCB assembly processes. Xponent's initial products have been targeted at single-mode communications applications, such as bidirectional FTTx assemblies. However, SMP is well-suited to a broad range of optical applications which will allow Xponent to diversify as it continues to grow.
